DR. UMEAKUEWULU RECEIVES LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL, SEEKS STRONGER COLLABORATION IN PEDIATRICS CARE The Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, Dr. Maureen Uche Umeakuewulu, on Monday, 23rd March, 2026, received members of Lions Club International led by the President of Awka Smithland Lions Club, Ln. Chikeluba M. Okechukwu. Lions Club International is a global humanitarian organisation headquartered in Oak Brook, United States of America, with presence in multiple countries including Nigeria, where it operates six districts. Awka Smithland Lions Club belongs to District 404A2. The organisation focuses on key humanitarian areas such as hunger alleviation, environment, vision, pediatric cancer, diabetes, and youth development. During the visit, the club donated ten bedspreads to the Pediatric Ward and pledged further collaboration in pediatric healthcare. In her response, Dr. Umeakuewulu warmly welcomed the team and appreciated their thoughtful gesture, emphasising the importance of partnerships that support quality healthcare delivery. She noted that the hospital is working towards establishing an Oncology Centre and stressed that Paediatric Oncology remains a critical area requiring collaboration. The CMD reiterated the hospital’s openness to partnerships in various forms including manpower support, equipment donation, and training opportunities. Dr. Umeakuewulu expressed commitment to sustaining the collaboration for improved patient care, particularly for children.
